From Meth to Marathon: The Story of Mitch Ammons

As human beings we have an inherent desire to celebrate the victories of others. In her bestselling book Braving the Wildnerness, renowned psychologist Brené Brown discusses the bravery needed to show up for others in moments of severe pain, not just times of collective joy.

My friend Mitch Ammons has experienced plenty of both. And despite his growing collection of accolades in both running and real estate sales, Mitch's journey toward greatness actually began on a road to recovery.

We shared parallel paths into the dark world of addiction while we were just teenagers. While mine resided in prescription drugs following my battles with cancer and onset of post-operative pain, Mitch's affliction started in high school with alcohol but eventually evolved into using hardcore drugs, including heroin, meth, and freebasing oxycodone.

Mitch and I also share something else: had we continued traveling down the paths we forced ourselves into, it's highly likely neither of us would be here to tell the tales of our lives.

Which is why I was thrilled that Mitch was willing to join me for the latest episode of The FINDING GOOD Podcast.

I first met Mitch at the 2021 Austin Marathon. We quickly bonded over our shared love of running, dogs, and his pursuit of romance with one of my best friends was an endeavor that had my full support.

Four years later, Mitch and Jordie are married with three fur babies, and the power couple is a fixture in the Austin endurance community. They're a perfect match.

With a million dollar smile, infectious energy, and relentless work ethic, it's no wonder Mitch excels at anything he puts his mind to. That competitive spirit is what drives him to be the best version of himself every day.

Mitch is a shining example of knowing it's never too late to turn a life around. It's not an easy feat - I know from personal experience that envisioning a life outside of the confines of addiction is nearly impossible. But the people around us wouldn't let us quit.

According to Mitch, he is now living the life he thought he'd have by drinking and using drugs. But he also realizes his contentment in life is something he could never have dreamed of, and plans on doing whatever it takes to keep finding good.

Like Mitch, I can't believe how life has turned out for me. I'm certainly grateful to be alive, but never did I imagine I'd be this happy. Just being cancer and addiction free was enough, but to be healthy and active, surrounded by countless inspired souls, and able to champion a variety of groups, movements, and causes, every day is better than the last.

In other words, to live like Mitch.

I am thrilled to share that our episode together is now live on YouTube and wherever you listen to podcasts!

Until next time, keep FINDING GOOD, y'all!

Mike and Kendall on Cape Hatteras, N.C. I can't believe it's already July. It feels like we just celebrated the start of the new year, and yet we're more than halfway through a trip around the sun that seems to be passing quicker than its precedents. While the first half of 2025 has my head spinning, I've learned from experience that when it seems like everything in life is going poorly, time seems to stand still. Conversely, when life is good, time flies. Buy FINDING GOOD on Amazon! Most...

As I'm certain it was for you, 2024 was easily one of the most memorable years of my life. As I continue revolving around the sun for the 40th time, much of this year so far has been spent reflecting on the journey that brought me to where...

Hello from MARFA! 39 years old. I never thought I'd live this long. At the same time this email lands in your inbox, I will be traversing the highways of West Texas with more than 100 of my friends. Every year for the last three, Breakfast Club ATX has escaped the humid heat of summer in Austin for the cooler, dryer mountain air of Santa Fe, New Mexico. While our excursions into the Land of Enchantment are cherished to be sure, this year - which happens to be our 4th birthday (August 7th) -...
