IT'S MY BIRTHDAY! - Finding Good Friday #3 - Part TWO
Published 9 months ago • 3 min read
Hello from MARFA!
39 years old. I never thought I'd live this long.
At the same time this email lands in your inbox, I will be traversing the highways of West Texas with more than 100 of my friends. Every year for the last three, Breakfast Club ATX has escaped the humid heat of summer in Austin for the cooler, dryer mountain air of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
While our excursions into the Land of Enchantment are cherished to be sure, this year - which happens to be our 4th birthday (August 7th) - Marfa came calling.
Spending my own birthday in a mystical place like Marfa is gift enough, but spending it with the inspired community of the BC faithful is the real blessing. The best part of it all is that my wife, Kendall, is here with me to be a part of the Marfa magic.
Breakfast Club ATX takes on Marfa, Texas
I can't say enough about this community. We descended on Marfa to spend quality time together with shared passions for cycling, food, and fellowship.
But the truth is I get to spend every day celebrating those things with people I love. Because I've made the conscious decision to do so. It's how I came up with FINDING GOOD.
To me, Breakfast Club is the perfect example of what can happen if you learn to be positively selfish by taking care of your body and mind (in this case, riding bikes and seeing new places), surround yourself with good people who in this case also happen to love bikes and food, and leave the world better than you found it, which is the outcome every time this community brings people together or supports a worthy cause. And we're just getting started.
I can't think of any place I'd rather be than right here with people I love, in a place that is as beautiful as it is remote, while celebrating the unlikely feat of growing another year older.
Now, I know you're asking yourself, "What would Mike want as a gift?"
Well, I have everything I could possibly ever want or need, but I do love paying forward my blessings. And I would so love if you joined us for my first charity event since publishing the book. See info below!
The Inaugural FINDING GOOD GOLF Classic is a GO! I've always wanted to host my own charity golf tournament, and I'm thrilled to host it at one of my life-long favorite venues with one of my favorite nonprofits as the beneficiary, Flatwater Foundation! We're expecting 250 guests with around 100 golfers and the event WILL sell out, so secure your tickets now! (Click the graphic below to sign up.)
Interested in sponsoring the tournament? Simply reply here to secure one of the remaining sponsorship opportunities!
Not in a position to donate? Totally fine. Just promise me that you'll do something good for yourself or someone else today. To me, that's just as impactful.
This past year has FLOWN by. This time last August I was celebrating the completion of my master's degree from Texas State University and was buried deep in manuscript editing in preparation for launching the book.
Since then, we've sold more than 5000 copies of FINDING GOOD and I've had the privilege of speaking at dozens of events, including one with the dynamic team at Whole Foods Market! There's a strong likelihood that if you're reading this, you played a significant role in making that happen.
THANK YOU. Thank you for believing in me. For always lifting me up. For reminding me that while life might not always go as planned, it's always worth fighting for. And if we remember to be positively selfish, surround ourselves with the best humans we can find, and do our part to make this world a better place, FINDING GOOD is easy.
Until next year. :)

For all of you who have so kindly reached out, I wanted to give you an update following last week's FGF email. I am elated to share that my dear friend Rachel endured a successful tumor removal surgery and is back home in Austin recovering! As with any cancer battle, there's still a period of "wait and see" to confirm the cancer has been fully eradicated and the slow moving process of healing from the trauma of the operation, but it's good news so far!
Mike and Rachel Wimberley in Austin - May 2024
That's all for now, my friends. Happy Friday to you and happy birthday to me! All my love to you and yours!
FINDING GOOD Friday!
The first Friday of each month will feature a good story from me to you to remind you that life may not always go as planned, but there is plenty to celebrate each day.
As always, don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, want to learn more about communication theory, are in need of some added inspiration, or just want to grab tacos and catch up.
As human beings we have an inherent desire to celebrate the victories of others. In her bestselling book Braving the Wildnerness, renowned psychologist Brené Brown discusses the bravery needed to show up for others in moments of severe pain, not just times of collective joy. My friend Mitch Ammons has experienced plenty of both. And despite his growing collection of accolades in both running and real estate sales, Mitch's journey toward greatness actually began on a road to recovery. We...
**If this is your first time receiving an email from FINDING GOOD (or you just need a refresher of why I am so cool 🤙), this little blog should do the trick.** My friends, It's hard to believe we are already halfway through the first month of the new year. As I'm certain it was for you, 2024 was easily one of the most memorable years of my life. As I continue revolving around the sun for the 40th time, much of this year so far has been spent reflecting on the journey that brought me to where...
Gaining Momentum Before I get into the meat of the FINDING GOOD FRIDAY update, I have a selfish ask. If you're the praying type, please send one up for my friend and personal hero, Rachel. If you've been following along with recent life events or listened to the first episode of The FINDING GOOD Podcast, you know Rachel's story. This morning at 7:15am, Rachel was wheeled back into the operating room at MD Anderson Cancer Center - my old cancer stomping grounds - as surgeons began working to...
